Fredensborg was named in memory of the end of the Great Northern War in 1722, when the castle was built. The castle complex was built in stages throughout the 18th century, designed by the best Danish architects of the time, JC Krieger, Nicolai Eigtved, L. de Thurah and CF Harsdorff. Frederiksborg Castle houses the National History Museum.
